Memorial Day is a time of remembrance in our country. It is a day to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives while serving in the military for our great nation. Flags will be flown at half-staff as we remember the dedication and patriotism of so many brave Americans who fought to protect and secure the freedoms we enjoy every day. As a school, we take the day off to reflect and remember, celebrate, and pay tribute to the soldiers who served in our country’s armed forces and paid the highest price.

Did you know that Memorial Day was originally called “Decoration Day”? This title was adopted back then because three women decided to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with homegrown flowers. The tradition caught on. In the years to come, people began using flags, flowers, and wreaths to pay tribute. The original purpose of this day, first practiced in Waterloo, New York, was to remember and honor the fallen from the Civil War. Shortly after the Civil War, the holiday received its official title, Memorial Day. It wasn’t until 1967 that Memorial Day legally became the official name. So, before you gather as friends and family and fire up the grill over this extended spring weekend, be sure to pause and thank our military for their service and courage. We pause to give thanks to God for the freedom we have to spend eternity with Him because of the gift of His Son, Jesus, who gave His life for us so that we might live!

Praying for you,

Mr. Batson
